Media release: The Exchange Club of Rome has honored Rome Transit Driver Vanita Mathis for her heroic efforts in saving the lives of her passengers when her bus caught fire and was completely destroyed on May 16th.
Rome Transit Director Kathy Shealy presented the recognition on behalf of the club at Friday’s meeting. She explained that Ms. Mathis had picked up up her special needs passengers at the Network Day Service Center when smoke began filling the bus.
With no fear for her own life, Ms. Mathis made sure all of the passengers, including two in wheelchairs, were quickly and safely removed from the bus which was soon engulfed in flames and later declared a total loss.
The Exchange Club commended Vanita Mathis for being a local hero and for her dedication to he job and the safety of her passengers.
